Handling the Problem Parrot What We Do: We take in companion parrots that need new homes. People often find themselves in situations that make it impossible to keep their bird. The most common reason people surrender their parrot to us is, they are often purchased on an impulse without much knowledge how to care for it. After time people realize just how much work the parrot is, and need to find them a new home. Sadly more often they are then passed from home to home, never really finding a good place to live. There are hundreds of situations that people find themselves in that bring them to the decision of giving up their bird. If you are one of them we are here to help you. When someone first calls us we will assign your case to a volunteer who will call you for a phone interview. We find out the history of your bird. It is helpful for us to know certain things at this time, and will learn more details later. We’ll need to know now Species - Age - Where you got your bird - Size of Cage - Vet history. We also need to know if your bird has been tested for contagious diseases. We also will want to spend some time discussing why you feel the need to give up your parrot. Sometimes people call us facing situations they don’t realize are typical of parrot ownership. If you are interested we can help educate you, and maybe help you fix the situation so you can keep your parrot. If that isn’t what you want then we will look at the situation to see when we are able to take in your bird. If your parrot hasn’t had any disease testing we may need to require certain items done before we can take them, or if we have room, we may just need for you to donate money for us to take care of it with our vet. As each situation varies, we will have to discuss your specific case. When your parrot is placed we put him in one of our wonderful foster homes. We have a great group of people (and always need more) who open their homes to care for parrots awaiting new adoptive homes. We take great care finding these families, as they are vital to the parrot’s well being. We look through our records to see if we already have a pre-approved home that may be a match with your bird. We then call and have them meet. If we don’t have anyone, we have the joy of living with the parrot until we do. It is not a quick process to adopt a parrot through us. We have strict guidelines that we follow. We don’t want any of these birds to have to lose their home again. If you have questions, you may call us, or e-mail us and we will respond as soon as possible. Please understand we are not able to travel long distances to take in your parrot. We will help you arrange shipping if you’re not in our area, or direct you to a group that is in your area.
