I Want a Bird

So you think you want a parrot. If you've read our site, you will know that it’s a tremendous amount of work. If you’re willing to do what it takes, it's also the most fun you can have with a pet.

These are not good reasons to adopt a parrot:

bulletMy child saw one, and keeps asking for one.
bulletI think it would be cool to have an animal that can talk.
bulletI like the fact it can be left in a cage.
bulletThe one I have doesn’t like me—can I trade?
bulletI already have many, but not one of “those”.
bulletI really would like to try to raise babies.
bulletIt would match my furniture.

These are the steps you'll go through to adopt a parrot through us. Sometimes the order will vary some. Please understand that distance can become a factor.  If you live too far from us we will try to help you find a similar organization closer to you.

To begin please e-mail us the following information:

bulletYour name.
bulletYour phone number and address.
bulletPets you have now.
bulletAny parrots you have had, and why you no longer have them.
bulletGenerally what you were wanting to have for a parrot and why.

One of our volunteers will contact you as soon as possible. We will want to get to know you a bit to help you with your decision about getting a parrot.

There are a couple of things that could disqualify you from adopting through us such as smoking or owning natural parrot predators. Each situation is handled on a case by case basis. Our goal is to make sure these parrots don’t lose their home again. We want people adopting a parrot to really understanding the commitment.

The next step is for us to come do a home visit. We like to meet your family, and see where you want to keep the bird. We will show you what items in your home may be dangerous to a parrot. If we find items that make it impossible for us to adopt to you, we will notify you via e-mail or mail. We’re not looking for ways to disqualify someone, but we must ensure a safe, well maintained home for the parrot.

After that we’ll have you come meet some birds that are available for adoption. We may not have exactly the species you were looking for, but by letting you interact with some birds we may find a great match for you. We’re good at this.

We will tell you each bird’s adoption fee, cage fee if they have a good one, and any vet bills. If you want to purchase a different cage, it must be approved by us first.

When you find a parrot you would like to adopt, and you're approved - you'll pay all fees, sign our adoption contract, and then we’ll make arrangements to bring you your new family member!

After the adoption is finished, our contact with you isn’t. We want to be there for you and your parrot. We will assist you after the adoption to ensure a long happy relationship between you and your new friend.
